It was widely expected that today’s NASA’s event would unveil a Presidential candidate to face President Uhuru Kenyatta in the August elections. However it all turned out to be a PR stunt meant to maintain the perception that the opposition was still united.
A leaked letter circulating in the social media indicating that Kalonzo Musyoka had been nominated by the Orengo-led steering committee pending ratification by NASA delegates complicated issues. The letter was apparently written for the sole purpose of ensuring that Kalonzo agrees to sign onto the NASA MOU after he vehemently refused to do so because an earlier MOU in 2013 was not followed. Credible reports indicate that Kalonzo had already set up an ‘SKM Campaign HQs’ and was waiting for an opportune time to

announce his indepedent presidential candidature outside both Cord and NASA. To keep Kalonzo around a decision was made by ODM to sign a letter making him the NASA presidential candidate.  However a clause was inserted saying that this decision would have to be ratified by NASA delegates. The letter was also signed only by James Orengo, which was to create another opportunity for contention on the letter after the MOU was signed. The other NASA co-principal (Moses Wetangula and Wycliff Mudavadi) were not informed of this decision.

Kalonzo accepted the deal despite seeing the trap laid ahead on the advise of his Secretary General Senator Hassan Omar. Omar argued that Kalonzo should take the deal despite knowing it was not genuine on the basis that once the decision that he is the NASA Flagbearer became public Raila would find it difficult to withdraw his support without destroying NASA.
